joining me now is cbs 5 political analyst joe tuman. i know you participated in a lot of these debates, coached people what would be your advice to mitt romney to give him the edge? >> reporter: it wouldn't be learn to do do zingers, people don't feel he is authentic. you can't teach people to do something that's unnatural. he has never been a mean- spirited person on the campaign, doesn't tell jokes well. trying to do those things would not be natural. his best chance tonight i think is to just be himself and try and connect with voters as a human being. he did that briefly in his convention speech. if did he that tonight i think people would give him credit for just being a real person. the president, on the other hand, just needs to continue do what he is doing with is low drama obama, low pressure. even if he hasn't won on points he would be perceived the winner because he would seem to be presidential and not off his game. >> reporter: there hasn't been a lot of talk about it, six segments on domestic policy, giving them more time.

live in oakland, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >>> thank you. a string of violence in san jose. police are investigating two separate homicides that happened within a four-hour span. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec with more on the search for the killer. >> the person that got killed was an older guy with a kid and a wife. >> reporter: this man didn't want to be identified but just after 12:30 this morning he watched his friend die after being shot outside of his birthday party at this home. >> all they said was shots fired. the guy ran into the house and dropped to the floor. i didn't see anything. all i was told is it was gangbangers wearing blue rags. >> reporter: police also believe the killing was gang- related. city's 36th homicide of the year. the 35th occurred earlier on south second street in downtown san jose on the same night. you can see remnants of the crime tape. police said there was a fight and when they got there a man was lying on the ground and taken to the hospital, where he died. >> the area is heavily policed. but nonetheless, you can't watch everybody. >> repo
